Maria Nickmann, obituary
ROCKLAND — Maria Nickmann, 93, died peacefully Dec. 12, 2015, at Sussman House in Rockport.
Born in Poland, of Ukrainian descent, on Nov. 19, 1922, she was the daughter of Vasyl and Anna Fedczuk. The eldest of three sisters, Maria grew up in Europe and was raised in Esch-Sur-Alzette, Luxembourg. During World War II she met Rudolph Nickmann, an Austrian born U.S. G.I. serving in Europe.
Although she spoke no English, the two were married. After Rudolph was discharged and had settled in the Bronx, N.Y, Maria joined him and they began a family and resided there for eight years. When their children were 8- and 7-years-old, the family moved to Bergenfield, N.J. After the death of her husband more than 30 years ago, Maria remained in New Jersey until moving to be with her daughter and son-in-law, first to DeLancey, N.Y., and later to Rockland, in 2013.
Maria was an avid reader and loved to stay up on her current events. She enjoyed watching both the local and world evening news, followed by Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune; often beating the on-screen contestants.
She was a talented crafter, making beautiful creations with embroidery and knitting. Being with family was very important to Maria and she loved nothing more than to spoil her great-grandson, Arthur.
Predeceased by her husband; and a sister, Stephanie Fedchuk; Maria is survived by her son, Rudy Nickmann and his wife, Janet, of Bergenfield, N.J.; her daughter, Stephanie Lampman and her husband, Harry, of Rockland; her sister, Olga Iwach and her husband, Eugene, of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; two grandchildren, Melissa and Heather; as well as her great-grandson, Arthur.
Maria’s family has chosen to remember her life privately. She will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband in the Brigadier Gen. William C. Doyle Memorial Veterans Cemetery in New Jersey.
Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home.
