UPDATED: Spruce Head man succumbs to injuries following Northport crash
UPDATE: On January 16, 2025, while under the hospital’s care, Mr. Cody Arsenault died as result of the injuries sustained in this crash, according to the Waldo County Sheriff's Office. The investigation of a fatal motor vehicle crash currently remains open and ongoing.
The following is a news release issued Jan. 15 by the Waldo County Sheriff's Office:
NORTHPORT — On January 15, 2025, at approximately 10:27 am, Waldo County Regional Communications Center received notification of a two-vehicle crash on Atlantic Highway in Northport. The location of the crash was near box 1422, which is just south of the Belfast Townline.
Members of the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, Maine State Police and several local area Fire Departments and EMS responded. The initial investigation revealed this crash involved a 2006 Subaru Outback, which was operated by Cody Arsenault, 31, of Spruce Head, and a 2024 Freightliner with an enclosed semi-trailer which was operated by Alejandro Sicaju, 51, of Cumberland, Rhode Island .
Mr. Arsenault was traveling south, behind a vehicle who began to slow to make a right-hand turn. As this was occurring, Mr. Arsenault crossed over the centerline which resulted in a head on collision with Mr. Sicaju’s northbound truck. Mr. Arsenault was ejected from his vehicle and sustained life- threatening injuries.
Mr. Arsenault was transported from the scene by an ambulance and later flown by Life Flight of Maine for medical treatment. Mr. Sicaju sustained minor injuries and was transported to the Waldo County General Hospital for medical treatment.
Traffic on Atlantic Highway remained closed for several hours as members of the Maine State Police performed a Crash Reconstruction and members of their Commercial Motor Vehicle Unit assessed the Commercial Motor Vehicle.
The crash remains under investigation and additional details will be released at a later date.
