CAMDEN — Camden Garden club has covered the cost of planting and maintaining the traffic islands on High Street since 1984. Every year since then a colorful array of annuals has greeted residents and visitors approaching town from the north, according to the Club, in a news release. When the club was deciding what to plant for 2020 they chose to celebrate Maine’s bicentennial with colors representing the state flag.

The State of Maine Flag features the coat of arms with a moose resting under a pine tree, a farmer, a seaman, and the North Star on a blue field. There are no official colors for the coat of arms, but the blue background is officially specified to be the same blue as that on the flag of the United States. The law establishing the flag was enacted on February 23, 1909 and it was modeled on flags used in the American Civil War. 

The plants selected this year are: ‘Victoria Blue’ Salvia, ‘Silver Dust’ Dusty Miller, ‘Easy Wave Blue’ Petunias and ‘Yellow’ Lantana. This patriotic display, together with the baskets of ‘Contessa Red’ trailing Geraniums that line the downtown streets, the planter on the Public Landing, maintenance of the Village Green and a number of other projects, reflect Camden Garden Club’s dedication to civic improvement and beautification.
