Lincolnville woman back in jail after found carrying a lighter
ROCKLAND — A Lincolnville woman who was released last month on personal recognizance bail from the Cumberland County Jail after being arrested for allegedly stealing a Rockport van in July and setting it on fire, was arrested again March 28 for violating a release condition. A lighter was found in her possession, according to court documents.
Melanie Vangel, 21, appeared before Judge Paul Mathews in Knox County Unified Court March 29 and was sentenced to seven days in jail.
According to court documents, Vangel contacted Maine State Fire Marshal investigator Mary MacMaster after she was released from Cumberland County Jail March 6. Vangel requested the return of her belongings that had been confiscated by MacMaster when she arrested her in July.
They met March 28 at the Camden Police Department for the exchange, according to court filings. When MacMaster conducted a bail check on Vangel, she allegedly found a lighter in her pants. Vangel said they weren’t her pants, according to the court affidavit.
MacMaster arrested Vangel for violating a condition of release and transported her to the Knox County Jail.
Vangel’s bail conditions included that she was not to possess any alcohol, drugs, and incendiary devices.
Vangel allegedly took a van from a Rockport home in the overnight of July 15-16, 2016, drove to New Hampshire, and then parked it next to a garage at 2 Light Terrace in Cape Elizabeth, and set the vehicle on fire, according to a news release from the Maine Office of Public Safety. The vehicle was destroyed.
MacMaster had arrested Vangel Saturday, July 16, on two counts of arson and unauthorized use of property.
