ROCKLAND — Larry D. York, Sr., 71, died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, Monday, January 20, 2020 at Sussman Hospice House in Rockport.

Born in Belfast, December 14, 1948, he was the son of Collins and Naoma Heal York. Educated locally, he attended Lincolnville schools and later Camden Rockport High School.

Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam War. He returned to the States where he reconnected with Barbara Gregory. A pair since 1978, they were officially married in 1992.

Larry loved anything to do with cars and often spent his time helping as a mechanic in various local auto body shops. For many years he worked as the maintenance person at the Knox County Court House in Rockland. One of Larry’s favorite pastimes was going to car shows and working on antique cars and hot rods with his best friend, Rosey Gerry. He also spent countless hours going ‘junking’ with his good friend Leroy Dodge.

He was an avid reader, and loved to go fishing, but his greatest joy in life was spending time with friends and family. He never missed the opportunity to go for a ride and stop in with friends or family for a cup of coffee. He especially enjoyed his daily coffee visits with his close friends, David and Sabrina Stewart and Gregory Kaler. His children and grandchildren were his pride and joy and his number one priority. He greatly enjoyed quality time with his wife Barbara, family and friends. He was a great story teller who loved reminiscing about the past and making new memories.

Larry was kindhearted with a heart of gold. He would give the shirt off his back and or his last dollar, even if it meant he went without. He was an amazing husband, dad, papa and friend and will be missed by all who loved him.

Predeceased by his parents, three brothers, and an uncle Seaward Heal with whom he had a special bond throughout life; Larry is survived by his wife, Barbara York of Rockland; his son, Larry York, Jr. and his wife Tabby of Union; his daughters, Lisa Pease and her husband Christopher of Belmont, and Holly York of Rockland; seven grandchildren, Nikita York, Nicholas York, Nathaniel Martin, Ashley York, Shyanne York, Evan Pease, Ruth-Anne Pease; four great-grandchildren, two brothers, Michael York of Waldo, Richard York, Sr. of Belfast; a sister, Monika Lee of Waldo; three sisters-in-law, Diane, Donna and Gail; a brother-in-law Walter; 2 special nieces, Shona Long and Kat Stewart; and many nieces and nephews.

A pot-luck gathering of love and remembrance will be held Sunday, February 9, from 2 to 6 p.m., at the Winslow Holbrook Merritt American Legion, Post No. 1, 335 Limerock Street, Rockland. All are invited to bring a favorite dish to share. Military Honors will be presented at 3 p.m.
