Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District has congratulated the winners of the annual conservation poster contest. This program is part of the National Association of Conservation Districts’ contest, which each year sets a national stewardship theme. Rebecca Jacobs, KLSWCD program manager, presented a lesson on this year’s theme, Watersheds: Our Water; Our Home, to more than 500 K-6 grade students in 11 schools throughout Knox and Lincoln counties. 

This year’s judges – Sharon Chadwick, District Supervisor; Anna Fiedler, Director of Land Conservation at Midcoast Conservancy and District Associate Supervisor; and BJ Dobson, District Volunteer – evaluated more than 300 posters on content, visual effectiveness, originality, and universal appeal to select the winners.

The following three grade-category winners will be entered into the state competition. Each of these students received a $25 gift certificate to Flatbread Pizza, where the District held an Environmental Education Fundraiser and Poster Contest Gallery on March 7:  

Grades 4-6: Zoe Curtis (Grade 4), Hope Elementary School

Grades 4-6: Audrey Colby (Grade 5), Thomaston Grammar School

Grades 2-3: Alexis Willey (Grade 2), Warren Community School

Grades K-1: Whitney Pearson (Grade 1), Appleton Village School 

The judges also selected a winner from every classroom that submitted entries:

Gilford Butler: Leo Gross (K), Lucia Herrick (1^st), Liam McLennan (1^st), Miles Merriam (1^st), Lucia White (2^nd)

South School: Cristiano Vargas (2^nd), Emma Ulvila (4^th), Caitlin Turner (5^th), Scarlett Martin (5^th)

Warren Community: Amelia Sukeforth (2^nd), Riley Johnson (2^nd)
