Judy Shreiner, obituary
Judy Shreiner passed away peacefully on Dec 7, 2016, in Augusta. Granite Hill living community had been her home for the past seven years. Born in New York City on April 17, 1928, to Harold and Julia (Andrews) Loskamp, she spent her childhood growing up in Miamisburg, Ohio, on the family farm.
In elementary school, her parents relocated to Ridgewood, N.J. After graduating from Ridgewood High School, she attended Oberlin College, majoring in history and minoring in English.
While living in Oberlin, she met her future husband, David (Bud) Moyer Jr., who was educated as a diesel engineer in the U.S. Navy. Judy and Bud were married in Ridgewood in 1950 and would eventually make Vinalhaven their home in 1956. Prior to that time, Judy and Bud lived in Okinawa with their first son, David, where Bud worked for the Voice of America. Upon their return to the U.S., they lived in the Washington, D.C., area, where daughter Candace was born, before settling on Vinalhaven and taking up island life. They fixed up an old house, which was right on the water. Bud ran the island power company and built boats. Their last two children, Linda and Jeff, were born at home on the island.
Although she was "from away," Judy was welcomed by the island community. She worked as a volunteer at the school and for the island doctor. Judy helped establish a dental program at Islands Community Medical Services, which continues to be a valuable part of the island health program today. After finishing her degree at Oberlin, she became a fourth-grade teacher for eight years at the Vinalhaven School.
Judy and Bob Shreiner were married on Vinalhaven on Christmas Day in 1977, and went to live in Rocky River, Ohio. After Bob's retirement in 1994, they bought a house in Oberlin, but enjoyed their cottage in Crystal Lake, Mich., during the summer. Bob died in 2004. Judy continued to live in Oberlin until moving to Granite Hill in Hallowell, Maine, in 2009, at the urging of her children.
Judy was a wonderful mother, grandmother, friend and confidant. She was supportive of all her family and always willing to lend an ear and encourage their individuality. Her quick wit often left her with the last word; she enjoyed making a "point," whether verbally or in card games. She enjoyed her annual excursions to Vinalhaven for the Moyer shop lobster feeds put on by the boys and her extended family.
Judy held various Granite Hill committee positions. She was an avid reader, a master of crossword puzzles, loved to play bridge and cribbage, and was always up for viewing a good ball game. She mastered the game of golf later in life, not wanting to be a golf widow. Judy was selected to become a member of the Maine General Retirement Community Board of Directors.
Judy was predeceased by husbands, David Moyer Jr. and Robert Shreiner; her brother, Harold "Dan" Loskamp Jr.; and her parents. Judy is survived by her son, David Moyer and his wife, Vicki, of Vinalhaven; her daughter, Candace Moyer of Bozeman, Mont.; her daughter, Linda Simard and her husband, David, of Augusta; her son, Jeff Moyer and his wife, Dinah, of Vinalhaven; her grandchildren, David, Chelsey and Ian; her stepchildren, Steve Shreiner and his wife, Wanda, of Frankfort, Mich., Mary Veta of San Diego, Calif., and David Shreiner and his wife, Aleza, of Encinitas, Calif.; her grandchildren, Brent, Tammy, Alex, Drew and Ella; and several great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Judy's life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Islands Community Medical Services, 15 Medical Center Loop, Vinalhaven, ME 04863.
Arrangements are under the care of Plummer Funeral Home.
