ROCKLAND — Jocelyn “Joy” Elaine Wilcox, 79, passed away peacefully, Wednesday morning, September 9, 2020 at her home with her brother and her close friend Marian Robinson at her side.

She was born April 5, 1941, in Winthrop, MA to James and Laura (Amirault) Wilcox. Joy was educated in local schools. Moving to Rockland with her family in 1956, she was a 1960 graduate of Rockland High School.

Following high school Joy went to work for the H.H. Crie Hardware Store in Rockland. It was while living in Winthrop that she took classes in banking which lead to a 13 year career in banking, starting as a teller and working her way up to loan officer and later the first female branch manager for a local bank in Rockland.

After leaving banking, Joy went on to work as a Bookkeeper for the Schooner Bowdoin. During that time the vessel was being restored to her original glory. The hard work paid off and the Bowdoin earned the right flank position for the USCG Barque Eagle during the Parade of Tall Ships.

Most notably, Joy worked as an Executive Secretary for the City of Rockland Department of Public Works for 18 years retiring in 2006.

Joy had many illnesses in her lifetime and was fortunate to have survived them all. She enjoyed art, especially creating pencil drawings and some paintings. She would design her own Christmas cards and send 20 to 30 of them out each year. She was also an avid reader, going to bed early but staying up late to read.

Joy is survived by her siblings, James Wilcox and his wife Kathleen of Franklin, Massachusetts, David Wilcox and his wife Marcia of Gorham, Barbara Hopkins-Dulac and her husband David of Scarborough, Richard O. Wilcox of Rockland and a sister-in-law Diane Wilcox, also of Rockland.

She is predeceased by her brother Allan who passed away in 2007. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.

A graveside celebration of Joy’s life will be held Friday, October 9, 2020, at 2 p.m., at Rockville Cemetery, Route 17, Rockport, Maine.

Arrangements are in the care of Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock Street, Rockland.
