Jane Oubre, obituary
EAST AURORA, N.Y. — Jane M. Oubre (née Pratt) of East Aurora, N.Y., died May 16, 2014. She was 87.
Jane was born at home on Spring Street in East Aurora. She attended the Lutheran Church, where her father, George Pratt, had done woodworking. Her grandfather, William George Pratt, had immigrated from Norwich, England, to Buffalo, N.Y., and was commissioned to do wood carving on the Washington National Cathedral.
Jane was a 1944 graduate of East Aurora High School. She later graduated from Bryant and Stratton Business School.
She and Sally Vought lived in New York city, where Jane's brother, James, was stationed with the Navy. Jane and Mrs. Shed drove to Louisiana, where Jane worked with a photography company. She met Paul while working together and they were married in New Orleans. They settled in Lubbock, Texas, where their first two sons, Jim and Chris, were born. To be near Jane's family, they returned to East Aurora and opened their studio, Oubre Photographers. Jane ran the business, including retouching and photo oils, which she learned in courses at Kodak. In East Aurora, their children, Renee and Stephen, joined the family.
Behind the studio at 669 Main St. was a barn, where Jane opened her business, Apple Barn Antiques. She ran a regular ad in the paper, "I buy old dolls." On her birthday one year, a friend ran a piece that read, " I buy old Jane Oubres."
Active in League of Women Voters, the Republican Committee and the East Aurora Planning Commission, she took civic participation seriously, never missing to vote. She was an avid gardener and a member of the East Aurora Garden Club. She and her family were avid campers, belonging to Wood Spring and later creating their own retreat, "the farm," where they enjoyed the peace and quiet of nature.
Jane and her husband were in the dance club that met at the Roycroft Inn. She was active with Aurora Children's Theater and Aurora Players. A group of friends, the Swallows, met regularly for drinks and conversation. Jane was an avid reader and enjoyed book club.
She is survived by her children, James and Judy Oubre of East Aurora, N.Y., Christopher and Denise Oubre of Richmond, Va., Renee Oubre of East Aurora, N.Y., and Stephen and Gretchen Oubre of East Aurora, N.Y.; her grandchildren, Rachel and Christopher Mest of Strykersville, N.Y., Meredith Oubre of Richmond, Va., Brandon Oubre of Roanoke, Va., and Sawyer Oubre and Jeannette Oubre of East Aurora, N.Y.; her sister, Susan (Douglas) Mayer of Bayside (Northport), Maine; as well as nieces and nephews.
