WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Tax Day filing deadline has been extended from April 15 to July 15, according to social media posts from Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree.

This news follows a March 18 announcement from the IRS allowing all individual and other non-corporate tax filers to defer up to $1 million of federal income tax (including self-employment tax) payments due on April 15, 2020, until July 15, 2020, without penalties or interest.

The March 18 guidance also allowed corporate taxpayers a similar deferment of up to $10 million of federal income tax payments that would be due on April 15, 2020, until July 15, 2020, without penalties or interest.

Despite the filing deadline extension, Mnuchin encourages those able to file by April 15 to do so to receive their refund sooner.
