Ira B. Warren, obituary
VINALHAVEN — Ira B Warren, a lifelong resident of Vinalhaven, passed away May 11, 2014, after a period of declining health. Ira was born May 17, 1931, on Vinalhaven and was married to Margaret Philbrook on March 18, 1951.
Early in their marriage, he built their home on Sands Road, where they lived together until her passing on June 18, 2009. Before becoming a fisherman, Ira worked for the Vinalhaven Light and Power Company and over the years also installed power lines and was a skilled electrician and carpenter.
Before Margaret became ill in 2007, they spent winters camping in Florida with friends they had made during their 35 years of camping. They also spent many happy times with their grandchildren, Amy and Aaron, including trips to Disney, camping trips and long visits on the island filled with hiking and fishing. After caring for his beloved wife during her illness, his greatest wish was to remain on the island, where he had spent his life, and in the home he had built and shared with her. After receiving his first computer on his 70th birthday, he became proficient in the use of the computer, voice recognition software and his digital camera. He enjoyed driving on the mainland and over the past few years was a frequent visitor at the home of his daughter and son-in-law (and little grand-dog Molly) in Pembroke, Mass., but was always eager to return to the place he called his "island home."
Ira was the son of the late Lyford and Sadie Warren and was predeceased by his brothers, Charles and William O Warren; a sister, Norma Wallace; and a niece, Minnie Louise. He is survived by his daughter, Katherine, and his son-in-law, Steven Kellerman of Pembroke, Mass.; his grandson, Aaron Kellerman of Pembroke, Mass.; and his granddaughter, Amy and her husband, Shane Pothier, of Rhode Island. He was looking forward to the arrival of his first great-grandchild in October. Ira was also survived by nephews Charles and his wife Rusty Warren, Ike and his wife, Roseanne Wallace, and Jimmy and Ira Todd Warren; many cousins; and by his sisters-in-law, Francis and Ruth Philbrook.
Ira was also survived by his nephew, William "Billy" and his wife, Doris Warren; his grandnephew, Reagan Warren; his grandnieces, Caitlyn Warren and Kristin Alley and her husband, Brad; and great-grandnephew Payton Warren. During the last months of his life, Reagan and Billy were there every day, supported and assisted by Doris, making it possible for him to remain in his home when he couldn't care for himself. The entire family made Sunday dinners special for him.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 31 at 11 a.m. at Cummings Cemetery.
Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Camden.
