On Thanksgiving Day, November 24, the Waldoboro Police Department received a report that a hunter found human remains off Old County Road in Waldoboro.

The Waldoboro Police Department and members of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene.

On December 7, the remains were identified by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) as being that of Douglas Barter, of Waldoboro.

Douglas Barter was last seen November 8, 2021, after leaving Miles Memorial Emergency Department on foot, and against medical advice, according to Waldoboro Police Chief John Lash.

He was reported missing on November 9 when he did not return home.

“Many efforts were made to find Mr. Barter which included agencies from across the state including the Maine State Police, the Maine Warden Service (K9s), the Maine Marine Patrol (air and water), the Waldoboro Police Department, the Damariscotta Police Department, and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office,” said Lash. “Several organized civilian efforts were made, as well.

Foul play is not suspected, he said.
