NORTHPORT — The Holmes Greenhouse foursome from Belfast emerged victorious at the Belfast Rotary Club’s Fundraiser and Golf Tournament at Northport Golf Club June 5, leading a field of 16 teams.

“The weather was perfect, the competition was fierce, and everyone had a wonderful time,” said Paul Doody, Rotary Club Golf Tournament Committee chairperson and Camden National Bank commercial loan officer, in a news release. “We congratulate winning team members Allen Holmes, Dennis Hart, Diana Leighton and Dale Leighton.”

Second place in the tournament went to the team from A & L Energy (Alan Blood, Chad Otis, Cory Chase and Bill Farris), and third place went to the Law Offices of Lee Woodward, Jr. (Lee Woodward, Phyllis Gaul, Ernie Woodward and Alex Carroll).

Despite the event’s title, the Rotary Club did not raise funds through sponsorships this year.

“Instead,” Doody said, “we used this annual event, unfortunately not held in 2020, to say ‘thank you’ to our many supporters and participants, with special thanks this year to Goldenrod Properties and Scott Hawthorne for making this year’s newspaper insert possible, and The First National Bank for sponsoring the tournament lunch. Next year’s event will continue a long history of raising money for Belfast Rotary to serve the people and organizations of our community. This year was just for fun.”

Belfast Rotary Club, founded in 1925 and approaching its centennial celebration, has nearly 70 members who meet in person or by Zoom each Wednesday at noon and is one of the largest and most active Rotary clubs in Maine. The Club raises funds year-round through activities such as the Belfast Harbor Fest, annual charitable golf tournament event, 5K road races and pancake breakfasts. Its community support includes donations to food pantries, holiday gifts to 150 children each December, $80,000 in scholarships to local college-bound high school students, and special donations as the need arises.
