Holding Makers Market during large cruise ship days being considered experiment
ROCKLAND — Rockland City Council will vote Sept. 17, 2024 to allow the growing Rockland Makers’ Market to relocate to Oak Street on the days when large cruise ships are in port.
City ordinance does not allow vendors in Harbor Park on days of large-capacity passenger vessels. Therefore, market organizer Christa Zuber is proactively seeking sites for small markets on Sept. 20, 22, 24, and 29, as well as Oct. 1, 2024. The Market has yet to occur on a large–passenger day (above 900), so being set up on these Tuesdays and Saturdays is being considered an experiment.
Zuber has organized four markets so far, with the most recent one drawing 40 vendors. Almost all vendors are from Maine, most local, yet others come from various places such as Portland, Augusta, and Bangor, according to Zuber. Many of them also set up stands at Rockland’s Sunday Strolls, which have popped up on the third Sunday of each Summer month since the Covid-19 pandemic allowed residents to gather outside again.
Zuber, an artist, moved from New Hampshire in 2020 and hoped to join an arts market like the one she was apart of in the Granite State. After a few years of searching and realizing that the steady market scene that she desired was non-existent in Rockland, she took the initiative to organize her own.
Organized markets on City property aren’t free, therefore vendors are charged a small fee to help support permits, advertising, musicians, and Porta Potties.
During the same City Council meeting, Sept. 17, councilors will vote to approve this year’s law enforcement Teamster 340 contracts. Police officers are looking for a 3.4 percent increase in wage this year, according to City Manager Tom Luttrell.
The meeting begins at 4:30 p.m. with councilors going into Executive Session. The regular public meeting will follow after the Executive Session ends.
