Hilltop crash in Knox injures five
KNOX - Five Midcoast residents reportedly suffered minor injuries as a result of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Routes 137 and 220, Sunday evening.
According to Maine State Police Trooper Corey Smith, Foner Curtis, 59, of Rockland, was traveling southbound on Route 220 in a 2001 Toyota Camry just before 5 p.m. when he failed to yield to a stop sign at Route 137.
His vehicle struck the passenger side of a 2004 Ford Explorer driven by Tabitha Cook, 33, of Montville, who was traveling westbound on Route 137.
The Ford went off course and ran directly into a utility pole at the southwest corner of the intersection.
The Toyota veered to the right of the pole, hitting a sign on the lawn of Ingraham Equipment, and coming to a stop roughly 100 feet off the road, atop a piece of tractor equipment that was on display outside the business.
Curtis was carrying one passenger, Naomi Crocitto, 28, of Warren. The Ford driven by Cook carried two passengers, Christopher Thompson, 42, and Cook’s 15-year-old son, both of Montville.
Smith said the details of the accident were conveyed to him by the occupants of the two vehicles, all of whom he described as being “conscious and alert” after the crash.
Some of the occupants complained of chest pain, possibly caused by seat belts, Smith said. Additionally, there were bumps, bruises and one bloody nose, but he said no one appeared to be seriously injured.
Firefighters from Freedom and Thorndike responded to the scene and helped some of the occupants out of the vehicles. It took emergency crews some time to get Curtis out of his vehicle.
All five occupants were taken to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast.
Speaking early Monday afternoon, a representative of the hospital said Curtis remained hospitalized in stable condition; the other four involved in the crash were treated and released.
