CAMDEN — A woman visiting Camden to hike the Mt. Battie Trail, which extends steeply up the face of the mountain, slipped while on a rocky portion of the path, and suffered a head wound.

Camden firefighters, an ambulance crew with North East Mobile Health Services, and two volunteers of the Coastal Mountains Search and Rescue team responded to the trail, some descending from the summit, while others climbed from below.

They found the hiker alert and talking, and accompanied by a young couple from Stockton Springs and Searsport, who had also been hiking the .6 mile trail and came upon her.

According to Fire Chief Chris Farley, the woman, 62, was descending from the top of Mt. Battie when she came to a steep outcropping of sharp rocks. She apparently slipped on oak leaves that had piled up in the area, fell, and hit her head against the rocks.

The wound, while initially bleeding heavily, was bandaged and wrapped, and the firefighters and search and rescue team carried her down to the waiting ambulance, at the top of Megunticook Street, in a Stokes Basket.

The firefighters included Farley, Todd Anderson, Matt Heath, John Heath, Jack Orestis, Alex Davis and Tracy Harford. North East’s crew was Jon Power and Heidi Mansfield. The search and rescue volunteers were Matt Silverio and another male.
