Tue, 07/30/2013 - 1:00pm

Harold Walker "Hal" Look Jr, 83, husband of Sue Brother Look, died July 21, 2013, after a period of declining health.

Born in Rockland Aug. 12, 1929, to Harold Look Sr. and Edna Simmons Look, he graduated from Rockland High School, Class of 1947, a member of the National Honor Society. Hal attended Tilton Prep school in Tilton, N.H., and University of Maine-Brunswick Annex, graduating with majors in English and journalism from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. While at Ohio Wesleyan, he and a fellow student, Sue Brother, fell in love and married June 7, 1951.

He was an officer in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict and had criminology training from Georgetown University in Wash, D.C., which led to being provost marshall (police chief) of Foster Air Force base in Texas. After service, he joined his father at H.W. Look Inc. Lobster Dealers, later operating his own enterprise, Look Lobsters, until retirement.

Hal was active in Maine Jaycees, holding offices on local and state levels and became an honorary senator. He was very involved in the Maine Lobster Festival, five years as parade chairman, overseeding the lobster boiler and even as a pirate in King Neptune's court. He was a longstanding member of the Rockland Congregational Church and participated in various activities throughout the years, including choir. He was also involved in fundraising, such as Daffodil Days.

Hal loved summering at "Looks Nook," the family cottage in Owls Head, and sharing his love of the ocean with all. His favorite pastimes included watching sports, playing games, studying Civil War history and art, painting, and writing prose and poetry. He was a lifelong fan — through thick and thin — of the Boston Red Sox, and was finally rewarded with World Series wins in 2004 and 2007. He held a summer acting job with a professional stock company at Camden Opera House, as well as in the Knox County Theater Guild, starring as well as directing in several productions.

Outgoing and social, his sense of humor, idealism, compassion and genuine interest in people won him friends wherever he went, and he enjoyed a variety of social groups throughout his lifetime.

His survivors include Sue, his wife of 62 years; his daughters, Christie and Terrie; his son, Dan; his grandchildren, Jacquelyn, Samantha, Nathan and Acadia; two great-grandchildren; his sister, Joan Ramig; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Fran and Ron Snider; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Eleanor Bonzey; his daughter, Deborah Look Mahler; and his son-in-law, Sam Mahler.

The family is deeply appreciative to the Knox Center for Long Term Care, which provided such a comfortable and supportive environment for Hal in his final days. Hal will be lovingly remembered by his many friends and family members.

Calling hours will be Friday, Aug. 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland, where a celebration of life will be held Saturday, Aug 10, at 10 a.m. There will be a reception afterward at 104 Limerock.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rockland Congregational Church Abiding Memorial Fund, PO Box 554, Rockland, ME 04841; or the charity of one's choice.
