ROCKLAND — Gordon R. Benner, 79, passed away peacefully Aug. 12, 2015, at the home of Arlene Wing, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Thomaston on Jan. 30, 1936, he was the son of Myron R. and Virginia Beckett Benner. Gordon was educated in local schools.

He was a master plumber and master heating contractor for many years, operating Gordon R. Benner Plumbing & Heating in Rockland. He was a very caring person offering his services to those in need. He was a past member of the Rockland Lodge of Elks No. 1008 and the Lodge of Masons. He will be truly missed by all those who loved him.

In addition to his parents, Gordon was predeceased by a sister, Joanne. He is survived by two sons, Myron L. Benner and his companion, Laurel Taylor, of Owls Head and Timothy Benner and his companion, Donna Cox, of Waldoboro; a sister, Mary-Lee Melvin and her companion, Randy, of Waldoboro; a granddaughter, Hilarie Benner, and a great-granddaughter, Chelsea Munroe, both of Cushing; Josie Knowles, whom he thought of as an adopted daughter; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Mary Rapose; as well as many extended family members.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit Monday, Aug. 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland, where a funeral service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Robert Bellows will officiate. Interment will follow in Achorn Cemetery on Old County Road in Rockland.
