BELFAST — Police have identified the woman killed late Wednesday night in Belfast as 55-year-old Lynn (Day) Arsenault, who was shot and died in a home she owned at 162 Waldo Ave.

Christopher Coleman, commander of the State Police Major Crimes Unit, said Thursday morning that Arsenault lived in Garland and was spending some time at the residence in Belfast with her son, 21-year-old Mathew Day. Mathew Day was also shot inside the residence last night, and is currently in stable condition at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. There was a fourth person inside the home at the time of the shooting, a friend of Day’s who called police, but police declined to identify them.

During a press conference at Belfast Police Department Thursday morning, Belfast Police Chief Mike McFadden said Waldo County Communications received multiple 911 calls at 10:56 p.m.

"The calls were reporting shots fired," said McFadden. "Within moments officers from Belfast, the Waldo County Sheriff's Office and Maine State Police responded to the area and immediately noticed two individuals who were injured."

Coleman confirmed that Arsenault was found dead at the home and her son was injured. He also said one of the 911 calls came from inside the home and one came from a neighbor.

McFadden said the State Police Criminal Investigative Division was called in to take over the crime scene soon after initial officers responded to the home and found the victims.

A little before 6 this morning, state Department of Public Safety Spokesman Steve McCaulsand put out a press release calling the shooting a homicide, and said that police were looking for 44-year-old Todd Gilday of Belfast. Police gave a description of Gilday, and said he was driving a 2007 gray Nissan Altima. At 6:33 a.m., the state DPS used its online Emergency Citizen Alert, to which the public can subscribe, asking for help in locating Gilday, who they deemed "armed and dangerous."

State Police Troop D Lt. Aaron Hayden said that a little after 7 a.m. Thursday, police learned that Gilday was at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport.

"[Officers with]Rockport Police Department, Knox County Sheriff's Office and Rockland Police Department responded to Pen Bay Medical and arrested Mr. Gilday and transported him to jail in Belfast," said Hayden. "There was no incident at Pen Bay Medical Center [during the arrest]."

Gilday's car, which had been parked outside the hospital's emergency entrance, was secured by police and has since been taken to Augusta as part of the investigation.

Coleman said that after the scene in Belfast was secured, the focus was on finding Gilday. He said that someone at the scene identified Gilday, which is how they knew to look for him.

"He has been charged with murder and there probably are more charges to come," said Coleman. "His first court appearance will be Friday [Aug. 30]."

Coleman said investigators are still working to determine the relationship between Arsenault, Day and Gilday.

"Mathew spoke to officers before he was transported to the hospital, and we believe the suspect knew at least one of them, though we are in the early stages of the investigation," said Coleman. "This was not random."

Day was transported to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor in critical condition, but Coleman said he has since been upgraded to stable. Day reportedly underwent surgery overnight.

A representative with the State Medical Examiner's Office was in Belfast overnight, and Arsenault's body has since been taken to Augusta, where an autopsy would be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

"As we have been doing since last night, we will be processing evidence and there may be other searches at other locations to gather more evidence," said Coleman. "We will be talking to family and neighbors and anyone with information about last night's violence is asked to contact investigators."

When asked if they knew why Gilday went to Pen Bay, to the emergency room, Coleman said that's still under investigation. When asked if Gilday tried to harm himself, he said, "No."

"I can say that shortly after we put the information out to the media we were looking for him, we got the tip where he was," said Coleman. "It's very early in the investigation and this is all we can share at this time."
