"This original adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth brings together a dynamic cast made up of both local MidCoast Maine performers and seasoned theater professionals from across New England, creating a community-centered celebration of Shakespeare under the open sky," said the Studio, in a news release. "The character of Lady Macbeth is based on a historical figure, but her story has been co-opted not just by Shakespeare, but by our culture at large. She is typically portrayed as the grasping, devious villain of the play Macbeth. All of her husband’s sins are laid at her feet, and her story is a cautionary tale about trusting ambitious women."
Would we think about her differently if we knew her full story?
With this question in mind, MCSS’s (Lady) Macbeth opens. This production tells the story of Gruoch, descended from Scottish royalty, married first to Gille Coemgain, the Mormaer (Earl) of Moray when she was about 17, with whom she had a son named Lulach. Two years later, Gille was burned to death with 50 of his men by Macbeth, who took over the rule of Moray and married 19-year old Gruoch to solidify his rule.
(Lady) Macbeth is the story of a young girl, already a wife and mother, whose world changed in an instant, and the choices she makes for her son, herself, and ultimately for her country.
Audience members are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs, and picnics to enjoy an evening (or afternoon!) of classic theater with a unique and historical twist.
