CAMDEN — Frederick Charles Bagnall Sr. was called home to heaven on Friday, January 28, 2022, after 87 years of serving his God, family and community. A kind and gentle man who always found the good in every person he met, Fred was a natural-born leader who brought out the best in others.
Fred was born on April 5, 1934 in Houlton, Maine, to Mildred (Stevens) and George Bagnall.
He remembered many happy years spent on his grandfather’s farm in Portage, and upon entering high school, showed his natural leadership as student body president and as team captain for his basketball and baseball teams.
After graduating from Houlton High School in 1952, he headed for Colby College where he majored in geology and served as president of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, recalling with a grin how they once stole (and returned) a small aircraft from a local farmer. Fred continued his education by receiving his master’s degree in geology from the University of Maine in 1958.
He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Huntsville, Alabama. There, his commanding officer designated him “social director and morale officer.” Through his work organizing joint dances with the local ladies’ sororities, Fred met the love of his life, Sue Inez Havron. Fred and Sue were joyfully married on October 22, 1960, a union that was blessed with three sons: Charlie, Steve and Mike.
Fred’s job as a geologist took the family from Maine to West Virginia, Maryland and Iowa, making lifelong friends at every stop. In each community, he found ways to serve, including coaching his boys’ sports teams, leading their Scout troops, and filling numerous civic and church positions.
Fred and Sue retired to Maine, and he moved into Windward Gardens shortly after Sue’s death in 2011.
Fred was an avid gardener, reader, Red Sox fan, and teller of tall tales. He was proud of his grandsons and thought his granddaughters “hung the moon.” He loved to share the fact that his son Mike and his grandson Justin, were both born on Fred’s birthday.
Even as his body failed him, Fred sought to show the love of Christ through small kindnesses to the staff and residents at Windward.
Predeceased by his wife, Sue, and his brother, Mike; he is survived by his three sons: Frederick Charles (Charlie) Bagnall Jr. and his wife Sherri of Rockland Maine; Steve Bagnall and his wife Jen of Cass City, Michigan; Mike Bagnall of Staten Island of New York; his grandsons Rick Bagnall and his wife Alicia (and great-grandsons Josh and Dustin) of Rockland; and Justin Bagnall and his wife Sarah (great-granddaughter Bryana), also of Rockland; granddaughters Anna Bagnall of Marlette, Michigan, and Paige Schulz and her husband Grant of Macomb, Michigan.; his sister-in-law Carolyn Bagnall of Excelsior Springs, Missouri, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Windward Gardens in Camden for a decade of loving care.
An hour of visitation will be held Saturday, March 5, 2022, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the Federated Church in Thomaston, 8 Hyler Street, followed by a celebration of his life at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Susan Stonestreet officiating.
