Fitzwilliam Sargent May, obituary
Beloved lover of skiing, brother, uncle and friend to many, Fitzwilliam Sargent “Fitz” May, 71, passed away in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Feb. 8, 2016. Fitz was born Jan. 2, 1945, in Brockton, Mass., to John B. May Jr. and Thalia Keith May.
Fitz grew up in Jackson, N.H., and Rockport, Maine. He graduated from Camden High School in 1963 and soon thereafter made his way west to Colorado and Utah.
Fitz is survived by his sisters, Gail May of Ecuador and Carolyn Parker and her husband, George, of Damariscotta; his brothers, Keith and his wife, Carolyn, of Lincolnville, and Sam and his wife, Alexandra, of Portland; his half-brothers, Nat and his wife, Heather, of Waltham, Mass., John of Kittery and Ned and his wife, Judy, of York; his half-sister, Joan of Eliot; and by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Fitz is also survived by his companion and best friend, Marilyn Jones; and many other good friends.
Fitz was a skier by nature, having grown up across the road from Black Mountain in Jackson, N.H., before moving to Maine, where he had a long time relationship with Sugarloaf. In 1971 Fitz moved to Salt Lake, where he was one of the first skiers at Snowbird. Skiing was the love of his life and Snowbird was his "home" as he referred to it. He was skiing at Snowbird when it opened in 1971 and spent many years there since. Fitz skied in many countries, including France (Chamonix, Verbea, Val-d'lsere), Switzerland (Zermatt and Saas-Fee with Andy Malura), Chile, Argentina, Japan, and his favorite, New Zealand, where he skied for 15 years and raced there for eight years with the Masters Ski Team from 1999 to 2007. He was a member of the Masters Ski Team for many years and won many medals.
His home was always a place that welcomed many friends from all over. He had many people who loved him and he loved them in return. He loved animals and had many pets throughout his life, including Mongo, Shirley, Yogi, Kitty F., Shade Jones, CC Girl, Maxwell and his pet chicken.
Fitz was a kind and good man, always generous in helping others and also contributing to many charities, including the Road Home and the Humane Society.
A gathering of friends and family will take place on Friday, Feb. 19 at noon on the plaza at Snowbird, and a celebration of his life will continue thereafter at 2 p.m. at SilverFork Restaurant in Big Cottonwood Canyon.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Adaptive Ski Program at Snowbird so that those who are physically disadvantaged can enjoy the sport he so loved.
The family will also host a celebration of Fitz' life this summer in Maine and will make details available at a later date.
