Eureka Lodge 84 pledges $3,000 support for victims, first responders of Robbins Lumber tragedy
SAINT GEORGE — Eureka Lodge 84, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, of Saint George, has pledged $3,000 in support of firefighters, EMS personnel, and families impacted by the devastating May 15 fire and explosion at the Robbins Lumber Mill in Searsmont.
The Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation has committed up to $50,000 in matching funds through participating Masonic Lodges across Maine to support local fundraising efforts benefiting victims and first responders affected by the tragedy.
The catastrophic fire at the Robbins Lumber Mill began on the morning of May 15 in a wood shavings packing area and later triggered a powerful sawdust silo explosion. The incident claimed the lives of 27-year-old volunteer firefighter Andrew Cross and Searsmont Assistant Fire Chief Wayne Woodbury, 76, and injured 11 others, including several firefighters, emergency medical personnel, and members of the Robbins family.
"The Robbins Lumber Mill has long been a cornerstone of the Waldo County economy, and the Robbins family is highly respected throughout the region," said the Lodge, in a news release.
In the aftermath of the disaster, communities across Midcoast and Central Maine have rallied together to assist those affected. One such effort, a community spaghetti dinner organized by Saint George Fire & Rescue, successfully raised $10,000 to support injured first responders and affected families.
“This fire was a serious blow to our Waldo County neighbors, and we believe it is our duty to come to their aid in such a time of need,” said David Emery, Master of Eureka Lodge 84. “Our hearts go out to the firefighters and EMS professionals who were injured while selflessly helping others.”
According to the news release, Eureka Lodge has maintained a longstanding commitment to charitable and civic work throughout the Midcoast region. During recent years, the Lodge has raised more than $12,000 annually to support civic projects, address community needs, and assist individuals and families facing hardship. Fundraising activities sponsored by the Lodge include crabmeat and shrimp roll lunches, pancake breakfasts, lasagna dinners, and other community events. Projects funded by these events often generate matching contributions from the Maine Masonic Charitable Foundation.
“Our organization believes strongly in helping our neighbors during difficult times,” said Emery. “The response to this tragedy demonstrates the strength, compassion, and generosity of Maine communities.”
