Eleanor W. Mathieson, obituary
ROCKLAND — Eleanor W. Mathieson, 88, died Dec. 1, 2015, at Scarborough Terrace in Scarborough, where she resided the past two years.
Born in Rockland on Aug. 23, 1927, she was the daughter of William H. and Frances V. Knowlton Weed. Educated in local schools, she was a 1945 graduate of Rockland High School.
Soon after graduating, Eleanor began employment with New England Telephone & Telegraph as an operator in the Rockland office.
Several years later, she met a fellow employee, Harry L. Mathieson. The couple were married April 30, 1960, at the Rockland Congregational Church. They made their home in Eleanor's family home, where they lived and raised their children.
While raising her daughters, Eleanor devoted her time to her family as a stay-at-home mother. She returned to the telephone company after her daughters were in high school.
A longtime active member of the Rockland Congregational Church, she was involved in the Ladies Guild. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Eleanor delighted in being around friends and family, and served as caregiver to many.
In addition to her parents, Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Harry, in 2001; her step-mother, Izzelle Andrews Weed; and two brothers, William H. Weed Jr. and Charles D. Weed. She is survived by two daughters, Kristin M. Mathieson of South Portland and her partner, Mark Stevens, of Cumberland, and Karen M. Rubin and her husband, Alan, of Gorham; one granddaughter, Lily Kristin Rubin of Gorham; her sister, Kathleen Faria of Portsmouth, R.I.; and several extended family members, nieces and nephews.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit Monday, Dec. 7 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St. in Rockland. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 8 at 1 p.m. at Rockland Congregational Church. The Rev. Seth D. Jones will officiate. Interment will follow in Achorn Cemetery on Old County Road in Rockland.
