NORTH HAVEN — Edwin (Bud) A. Thayer, 93, died Friday, May 13, 2022, at the Sussman House in Rockport.

Born at North Haven, October 5, 1928, he was the son of Raymond L. and Florence E. Bray Thayer.

He attended North Haven elementary schools and early high school in Swampscott, Massachusetts during the war, and was a 1947 graduate of North Haven High School.

On June 25, 1949, he married Ruth W. Babbidge. The couple made their home at North Haven all their married lives, where they raised three children and were involved in many of the community activities. Over the years he served on the board of selectmen, as town constable and on the North Haven Conservation Partners board.

Throughout his career, Bud worked as a mechanic for Frank Sampson, was a lobsterman into his 80s, and for the Fox Island Electric Co-op as a lineman and had his own electrician’s business. He was most noted as an accomplished boat builder and owner/operator of Thayer’s Y-Knot Boat Yard at Southern Harbor.

As a “hobby” he maintained many older island cars for summer residents, rebuilt model T’s and other touring cars – many times starting from an old frame and boxes of parts. He so enjoyed going to flea markets with his good friend Elliott Brown, wheeling and dealing for car parts and pieces.

Upon retirement from the boatyard he and Ruthie spent winters on the Florida Keys traveling back and forth in their conversion van. They made many, many friends over the years.

Other than his parents, Bud was predeceased by a sister, Dorothy Thayer Beverage, in 1978.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 73 years, Ruth, of North Haven; his children Linda Thayer Haskell and life partner Roy Penniman of New Harbor, Deborah Thayer Langley and husband Robert Langley of Skowhegan, Raymond Thayer and wife Donna of North Haven; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Per his wishes no service will be held at this time.
