Douglas J. Ross, obituary
UNION — Douglas John Ross, 89, of Union, passed away peacefully Dec. 7, 2016, at Togus in Augusta. He was born Jan. 26, 1927, in Norwich, Conn., to Montell Ross and Mildred (Jones) Ross.
He moved to Maine as a youngster and attended local schools. He entered the Navy and served in World War II.
After the service he became a master plumber. He worked for Jameson Plumbing and Heating for many years. He also was part owner of Gordon's Market in Union.
Doug's many passions included fishing, hunting, gardening, bowling and playing cards.
He was always willing to lend a helping hand.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy (Spear) Ross; and his brothers, George Ross, Montell Ross and Frederick Ross.
In addition to his wife Arlene Burns Ross of Union; survivors include his daughter, Rita Pooley and her husband, Chester, of Detroit, Maine; his step-daughters, Brenda Overlock and her husband, Roger, of Benton, and Virginia Flood and her husband, Lee, of Belfast; his granddaughter, Donna Nichols of Wilton; his grandsons, Aaron Pooley and his wife, Stefie, of Fairfield, and Matthew Elwell and his wife, Ashley, of Union; eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Eunice Flagg of Jefferson; his brother, Donald Ross and his wife, Pat, of Warren; and many nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday, Dec. 15, from noon to 1 p.m. at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St. in Waldoboro. A celebration of life will follow on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 1:00 p.m., also at the Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro. Interment will be at the Shuman Cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made in John's name to the VA Hospice Facility, 810 Eastern Avenue, Augusta, ME 04330.
