Donald “Dode” Andrus, obituary
ROCKPORT — Donald “Dode” Andrus, passed away on March 14, 2025. Dode was born at Knox Hospital on March 3, 1948 and was the son of Ted and Maxine Andrus. Dode attended Rockland schools and graduated from Husson University, before joining his parents at the family business, Andrus Flowers & Gifts on Main Street in Rockland.
An athlete from the start, Dode was voted “most athletic” by his classmates in 1966. Dode was a skier, football and basketball player, competitive golfer, runner, cyclist, and triathlete. Sports shaped much of Dode’s life, right up until his final years when he would meticulously log thousands of miles on his road bike. He was a gentle and deeply private person, but his close friends and family knew him as kind, caring, thoughtful, loving, generous, and quick to smile. Dode would always put other people first, especially his wife of 41 years, Sarah LaGassey Andrus, whom he loved endlessly. The two had many interests in common, but world travel, reading, time with family, running, road biking, and skiing topped the list.
Dode leaves behind many beloved friends and family, including his brother, David (Bobbie) Andrus, and his wife’s family.
His last wishes were for people to remember him in his favorite place: on his road bike, pedaling along the rugged Maine coast. He also requested that there not be a public memorial service.
Sarah welcomes your warm memories of Dode; cards can be mailed to PO Box 783, Rockport, ME, 04856. Condolences and memories may also be shared at www.longfuneralhomecamden.com.
Dode felt strongly about local families having enough food to eat, so if you wish to leave a memorial donation to the AIO food pantry, that would be appreciated: https://www.aiofoodpantry.org/.
Arrangements are with the Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 9 Mountain Street, Camden.
