Daniel W. Burns, obituary
WARREN — Daniel Webber Burns, 68, of Warren, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 25, 2020. He died at Maine Medical Center in Portland due to complications from heart surgery.
Born in Portland on June 25, 1952, he was the son of William H. and Beatrice (Miles) Burns and was a 1971 graduate of Rockland District High School. After H.S. he joined the Coast Guard and served his country towards the end of the Vietnam war. Later, he attended the University of Maine at Fort Kent studying engineering.
For over thirty years, Dan has been employed as a project researcher for the Department of Transportation for the State of Maine. Over the years his work involved travelling to various DOT projects throughout the state researching deeds, titles, and zoning. He loved his job.
On October 12, 2002, Dan married Sonja Pease. A man of strong faith, he loved the Lord and was a great source of strength for Sonja. They loved attending the First Baptist Church of Waldoboro. Family life was also very important to them. They enjoyed travelling throughout the United States, to Europe, and taking cruises.
Dan’s hobbies included collecting and watching John Wayne and other Westerns. He also enjoyed metal detecting and prospecting for gold. He panned for gold in Alaska and Colton, California where the Gold Rush began. Dan was a staunch conservative and enjoyed reading political books of that nature.
Dan was a quiet, steady and reliable man. He never had a bad word to say about anyone. And, there never was a person who met him who didn't like him. He married into a large, loud, and sometimes obnoxious family but it didn’t seem to bother him. And that very family loves him and misses him very much.
Surviving is his wife of 17 years, Sonja Burns; Sonja’s children, Rachael (David) Umstead, Zacchary (Stephanie) Aiken; grandchildren, Henry and Hudson Umstead, Teagan and Christopher Aiken; brother, William Burns; special niece, Amanda Burns; Aunt Pat Donohue; father and mother-in-law, Nathan and Charlotte Pease, Jr., brother-in-law, Vick (Shanie) Pease; sisters-in-law, Stacey (John) McKenzie, and Molly (Wayne) Luce; several nieces, nephews and cousins including Tim (Joann) Clark and Kathleen (Wesley) Vosmus.
He will be greatly missed by Fatso, his cat and his dog, Rosie.
Dan was predeceased by his parents; his stepson, Vincent P. Galkowski; and Uncle Guy Donohue.
