Cushing garage fire remains contained, spares house
CUSHING — The walls and roof of a Cushing garage kept flames so well contained to the interior that the first firefighter to arrive at the River Road location didn’t immediately see evidence of a fire. Only after a walk-around to where flames were reported along the rear wall did responders get the first glimpse of what awaited them.
Tuesday evening, Dec. 14, 2021, at approximately 5:30 p.m., Knox Regional Communications Center dispatched Cushing, Warren, Thomaston, and Friendship firefighters to 509 River Road. The biggest concern, as they raced to the scene, was the proximity of the garage to the house. The distance could have been measured in single-digit feet.
For awhile, the structure kept its walls intact, hiding its contents, until it could hide no more, exposing an interior of flames.
Using the water already in the tanker trucks, the blaze was knocked down in about half an hour, leaving firefighters with approximately another hour and a half of overhaul.
No one was injured, and the house remained unscathed.
River Road was reopened to traffic around 7:30 p.m.
