WALDOBORO (Nov. 16, 7:10 p.m.) — A 79-year-old Waldoboro man died at the scene of a crash on Route 1, in front of the Country Kitchen Thrift Store in Waldoboro, after he pulled out of the parking lot across the street into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer truck.

Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde early Wednesday evening said that Rody Conway was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck, which responding officers saw in the ditch when they responded to the scene. Also in the ditch was a 1999 Kenworth Tractor Trailer, on its side, facing north on the southbound side of Route 1.

The accident occurred around 9:35 a.m. on Nov. 16, and Waldoboro Police, Fire and EMS responded to the 911 call.

Labombarde said the investigation determined that Conway was pulling out of the Bullwinkle's Steak House parking lot, headed south on Atlantic Highway. It was also determined that Conway pulled into the path of the Kenworth truck, being driven by Andrew Pierce, 31, of Palmyra.

    Pierce was hauling dairy products.

Conway died at the scene from injuries sustained during the crash. Labombarde said Conway was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the cash.

    Pierce was uninjured.

Waldoboro Fire Department slowed traffic to one travel lane for more than eight hours Wednesday, while investigators did their work and the vehicles were removed from the scene.

Assisting in the investigation were members of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office (accident reconstruction), Maine State Police Mapping and Commercial Vehicle units, Maine Department of Agriculture and Maine Department of Environmental Protection.

Labombarde said that the accident remains under investigation, but that at this time, no criminal charges are expected.

WALDOBORO (Nov. 16, 3:30 p.m.) — A two-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Waldoboro, across the roadway from Bullwinkle’s Steak House and The Bog Tavern, has kept traffic down to one lane all day Wednesday.

Maine State Police and Waldoboro Police Department have been on scene since the crash occurred, around 9:30 a.m. A tanker truck remains on its side in the ditch as of 3:15 p.m.

No information has been released yet about the accident, pending a press release from Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde, according to Lincoln County Dispatch.
