Cony edges out Camden Hills Boys Varsity Basketball team in close game
On Friday, Jan. 31, Camden Hills Regional High School once again hosted Cony’s basketball team, except this time it was the boys. It was also another Senior Night, meaning the last home game for all the team's seniors, of which there were three.
When these two played each other last month, it was an absolute barnburner, with Camden scoring a whopping 91 points in the win. Cony players were no slouches either, and put up an impressive 79 points themselves.
On Jan. 31, the game was close. It was also entertaining and one of the best games I’ve seen regardless of whether it's college, NBA or high school.
But, it had a somewhat anticlimactic ending, with Cony winning off of two free throws and a final score of 70-68.
Camden needed a win as they were the sixth seed going into the game and there are only eight playoff spots in Class A North. With this loss and their next opponent, Medomak Valley High School, being undefeated , there's a real chance they could miss the postseason.
I caught up with seniors Matthias McPhail (No. 3), Teagan Lowe (No. 21) and Hunter Beveridge, and asked them how they felt about playing their last home game.
“It’s pretty sad that it’s our last home game as a part of this team but I am still excited looking ahead to the playoffs where I think we can make a deep run,” said McPhail.
“It’s a little sad, but all good things must come to an end," said Lowe. "I’ve spent countless hours playing on our court, and it will be fun to play a game one last time with my teammates. I thank the basketball program for giving me such a great opportunity over the years.”
“It feels unreal because I still feel like a sophomore on the inside and I can’t believe that I won’t be playing in that gym anymore,” said Beveridge.
As for the future, McPhail said, "“After high school, I am planning to major in sports management but I am still undecided on what school I will attend.”
Lowe said he would be studying finance in college, "but I remain undecided on which university I’m attending.”
And Beveridge will be traveling to Utah State to study electrical engineering.
Camden’s varsity boys and girls play their final regular season games at Medomak Valley on February 6.
