CAMDEN — Children’s House Montessori School (CHMS) welcomes Rachel Nixon as the new Head of School.

According to CHMS, in a news release, Nixon, a longtime Midcoast resident, is known for her compassionate leadership in education and nonprofit management across several Midcoast organizations, including the Knox County Homeless Coalition, The Dancing Elephant community center, and the Georges River Land Trust.

“Nearly 150 years ago, Maria Montessori developed a system of education through exploration and discovery – the same values we strive to nourish in our young learners today,” said Erin Cochran, CHMS Board Member. “Rachel’s leadership style and experience resonate deeply with the Montessori philosophy of kindness, creativity, and independence. We look forward to Rachel guiding us in a new and exciting chapter for our school community.”

Nixon began her career as an educator, teaching third grade at the Shady Hill School in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the early 1990s. She enjoyed nurturing young learners, connecting with parents, and developing curriculum. Since returning to Maine in the late 1990s, Nixon has led education programs in environmental stewardship, the arts, and wellness. Most recently, Nixon served as the Donor Relations Specialist at the Knox County Homeless Coalition, where she collaborated with the Board and development staff to successfully engage and energize community members to raise funds to help end the cycle of poverty and homelessness in Midcoast Maine.

“I am excited to support the CHMS children, parents, and teachers as we learn and grow together,” said Nixon. “I am committed to making this inspiring educational experience available to even more families in the Midcoast. Maria Montessori was a pioneer – it is a privilege to carry her visionary philosophy forward!”

“In accordance with CHMS’ charter, Rachel was unanimously and enthusiastically endorsed by the Board of Directors for this role, concluding a search launched last summer,” said the release.

This effort was led by a Search Committee that included staff, parents, and board members.

Nixon holds a B.A. in Art History and Minor in Spanish from Mount Holyoke College and a M.A. in Elementary Education from Lesley College. Additionally, Nixon has received certifications in Children’s Yoga and Mindfulness in the Classroom.
