Celebrating 25 Years of Community Care: Knox Clinic’s Dental Program Restores Smiles, Hope, and Health
As we celebrate 25 years of caring for our community, the Knox Clinic’s Dental Program stands as a testament to the power of compassion and connection. What started in 2001 as a small service for low-income adults without dental insurance has grown into a lifeline for countless individuals. For many, dental care is a luxury that gets set aside, but at the Knox Clinic, we believe that a healthy smile is key to a healthy body and spirit.
Our Dental Program has transformed lives in quiet but profound ways. In 2015, we took a major leap forward, expanding to serve children as well. Today, we are the only dental program in the area that accepts MaineCare, giving children and adults alike access to the care they need and deserve. It’s not just about cleanings and x-rays—it’s about giving people a reason to smile, restoring confidence, and providing relief from pain. Our dedicated team brings their hearts to every patient they see.
Rob Grassi, DMD, reflected on the deeper impact of his work: "Two years ago, I was drawn to the Knox Clinic because of its mission to restore and protect the smiles of our community. But what I found here was something even more special: a place where every smile we help restore represents hope and dignity. We’ve helped people walk out with new confidence or leave pain-free for the first time in years.
Whether it's making a full set of teeth for someone who thought they'd never smile again, or simply keeping a watchful eye to prevent future problems, there’s a real, tangible impact in what we do."
Michael Packowski, our Dental Assistant, joined the clinic hoping to learn, but what he found was a place where care runs deeper than just treatments:
"I’ve been at the Knox Clinic for a short time, but the lessons I’ve learned here have been life-changing. Not just about dentistry, but about people. Watching patients find relief, seeing their gratitude, and knowing that we’re giving them the gift of health and confidence—it’s incredibly humbling. This experience has solidified my path to dental school because it has shown me that dentistry isn’t just about teeth; it’s about changing lives. I’ll never forget the joy on a patient’s face when they realize they can smile without hiding anymore."
For Ali Gaeth, RDH, our Dental Hygienist, the Knox Clinic is where relationships are built and health is restored:
"There’s something special about the work we do here. It’s more than just cleaning teeth—it’s about giving people access to care they never thought possible. For so many, coming to our clinic means finally getting relief after years of struggling. The relationships I’ve built with my patients are priceless, and it’s deeply rewarding to know that, in some small way, I’m helping them live healthier, happier lives. A healthy smile can change everything, and it’s an honor to be part of a team that is making that possible for so many."
As we reflect on 25 years of service, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for the patients, volunteers, staff, and donors who have made this journey possible. Every smile we help restore, every patient who leaves our clinic with renewed hope, is a victory we share together as a community.
Looking ahead, we are excited to continue expanding our services as we transition to a full-time community health center. We know there are many more smiles to restore, and many more lives to uplift, and we can’t wait to continue this journey with you. Together, we are creating a future where everyone, no matter their circumstances, can receive the care they need to live healthier, happier lives.
