Catherine Johns, obituary
ROCKLAND — Catherine R. Johns,78, died May 20, 2014, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. She was born March 20, 1936 in Buffalo, N.Y., to Harlow and Catherine Spaulding Raymond. She grew up in Buffalo, N.Y., and graduated from Riverside High School. She graduated from Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y., and the University of Maine Law School.
Catherine worked as a lawyer, specializing in family and real estate law, in Portland for many years. She later taught at Genesee Community College in Batavia, N.Y. She was assigned counsel in Genesse County, N.Y., helping many who could not otherwise afford legal help. She also worked as a lawyer for the National Organization of Women. Catherine enjoyed philosophical and intellectual conversations. She also enjoyed reading and was often found with her nose in a good book. She loved all animals and especially her dog, Russell.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard M. Johns.
She is survived by her daughters, Dr. Elizabeth von Felten and her husband, Ken, of Rockport, and Sarah Woodman and her husband, Leif, of Johnson Creek, N.Y.; her son, Richard E. Johns of Darien, Ga.; her sister, Helen Dowdell of Jacksonville, Fla; her brother, Harlow P. Raymond of Manchester, N.H.; her grandchildren, the Rev. Vanessa E. Colesworthy of Thomaston, Margaret Woodman of Johnson Creek, N.Y., and William Woodman of Johnson Creek, N.Y.; her nieces, Catherine Dowdell of Jacksonville, Fla., and Heather Raymond of Lynn, Mass.; her nephews, James Dowdell of Brooksville, Fla., and Charles Dowdell of Atlanta, Ga.; and her beloved dog, Russell.
A gathering to celebrate Catherine's life will be held Sunday, May 25 at 3 p.m. at Bartlett Woods, 20 Bartlett Drive in Rockland. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Catherine's memory to your local library.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
