Carlton Henry Winslow III, obituary
It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Carlton Henry Winslow III, husband, father and grandfather.
Carlton, affectionately known as Babbo, was born in Meriden, Connecticut on Jan. 16, 1941, to Carlton Henry Winslow II and Winifred Gustafson Winslow. He graduated Williston Academy and Colby College and earned an MBA from Columbia University. He married Catherine Orton Sweet on June 25, 1966. Shortly thereafter they moved to Kentucky, where Carlton served in the U.S. Army at Fort Knox. He oversaw compassionate reassignments during the Vietnam War and Kitty worked as an illustrator for the Non-Commissioned Officers Academy.
Carlton and Kitty both loved attending the Kentucky Derby and learned to make Mint Juleps. After two years, they returned to Connecticut and eventually settled in East Hampton at the Winslow’s beloved childhood summer home on Lake Pocotopaug. There they raised their two children, Tamara and Carlton IV. Carlton III worked in finance for many years in Connecticut.
Carlton loved nature, animals, trees, sunsets and the moon. When the weather was nice, at the lake, he gathered family and friends to watch the sunset, claiming he was responsible for making it drop below the horizon. If you were lucky enough to visit Lake Poctopaug as a child, he would take you out to his worm farm and dig fat worms to fill his old tin coffee can. He would show you how to bait the hook and drop a fishing line off the dock. You might feed baby ducks and watch snapping turtles appear at sunset. In the winter there were skating parties on smooth black ice.
Carlton and Kitty retired to Maine where they had spent many wonderful summer vacations. One of Carlton’s favorite destinations in August, was Lazy Gut Island, way Down East. He and Kitty landed in the mid-coast and had many great years with family. One of the greatest joys of Carlton’s life was his four grandchildren. He rarely missed a baseball, football, lacrosse or basketball game and was so proud of each of their accomplishments.
Carlton and Kitty were married for 58 years. Every election, they dutifully voted and joked that they would be canceling the other’s vote. They hosted many memorable parties at Lake Pocotpaug and made many new friends in the Rockland area. They shared a great love for their family and friends. There were many happy Thanksgiving in Vermont with the extended Winslow clan.
Carlton is survived by his wife, Kitty Winslow; his sister Judy Robison (Neal) of Stony Creek, Connecticut; his sister Nancy Harwood (Rick) of East Lyme, Connecticut; his brother Kenelm Winslow of Appleton, Maine; brother Jay Helmes (Terry) of Orinda, California; his daughter, Tamara Davis (Mark) of Port Clyde, Maine; son, Carlton Winslow IV (Katherine) of South Thomaston, Maine; and grandchildren Zachariah, Grace and James Cody and Dylan Winslow.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother J.K. Winslow, and sister-in-law-Sylvia Winslow.
A funeral will be held for Carlton at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Thomaston, Maine on Saturday September 28 at 11 am.
