‘Our approach to exploring for minerals is progressive and sustainable’

Canadian mineral exploration company to meet with Union Select Board

Tue, 02/14/2023 - 8:45pm

UNION — The meeting is scheduled as a workshop, meaning no motions will be made, no votes taken. It is to be purely informational and the public is welcome to attend, or watch via livestream. The topic: A presentation from Exiro Minerals, a Toronto-based company that generates and explores mineral projects, according to its website.

No proposals have been made to the town, nor are there any applications before the Union Planning Board from this company, said Town Manager Jay Feyler.

In a Feb. 9 letter to the Union Select Board, Exiro President and CEO Shastri Ramnath wrote: “Our intention is to introduce ourselves to the Select Board and to learn more about the community of Union.”

She wrote that the company is privately owned: “by a responsible group of shareholders and our team owns 30% of the company. Our approach to exploring for minerals is progressive and sustainable, and we firmly believe that projects can only be advanced in collaboration and partnership with local communities.

Our priority is to engage with you and the town of Union openly and ahead of any decisions being made about potential exploration activities. We value your opinion and want to hear your community’s views, values and understand areas of local significance.”

She said her company met with Feyler and the town’s code enforcement officer, Grant Watmough last month.

Ramnath said company representatives had read Union’s Metallic Mining Ordinance.

“We understand that there is a complicated history of mineral exploration in the area and a justified sensitivity around Crawford Pond,” she wrote. “We want to be clear that Exiro is not related, in any way, to the Canadian exploration company who came through this area decades ago and we take our environmental and social impact very seriously.

“Exiro is not your average mineral exploration company. We are values driven and we put people, relationships, and commitments at the core of our business practices. We hope to build a strong and trusting relationship with the town of Union, learn about your community, and discuss how we might be able to work together to unlock the economic potential in this area while protecting the environment.

“We believe that partnerships with local communities, including commercial partnerships, are critical to developing mineral resources sustainably. Communities should benefit from the mineral wealth in their area.

“We also firmly believe that critical minerals are more than ever very important to North America and are confident that mineral exploration and development can be done safely, responsibly, and in a way that preserves and protects the land.”

At the meeting, Exiro said it planned to introduce its CEO, community engagement advisor, senior geologists, and local consulting geologist and talk about:
