Camden Snow Bowl girls ski team wins alpine state championship

Mon, 02/17/2020 - 1:45pm

CARRABASSETT VALLEY and FARMINGTON — The Camden Snow Bowl middle school alpine and nordic ski teams traveled Tuesday, Feb. 11 and Saturday, Feb. 15 to compete in the Maine Junior Ski League alpine and nordic skiing state championships.

The championships were held at Sugarloaf Mountain in Carrabassett Valley on Tuesday and at Titcomb Mountain in Farmington with alpine skiers participating in giant slalom and slalom events, while nordic skiers participated in classical and freestyle events.

The highlight of the championships was the Camden Snow Bowl girls team claiming the state championship in alpine skiing, propelled by an excellent 20-point victory in the giant slalom event.

“It (the giant slalom event) was a challenging set coming off the steeps through a delay and into the flats with a rhythm section had a large offset,” said coach Weber Roberts. “Camden’s success came from doing a thorough inspection and skiing the course and not the terrain. Many of the teams that Camden has been finishing behind all year miscalculated the set allowing a big window for the girls to capture the victory.”

Lily Stowe captured sixth place, Zola Roberts finished eighth, Maggie Metzler placed 12th and Piper Urey finished 14th.

“It was a team effort,” said Roberts. “By having all of our scorers in the top 15 we had a great result and the depth and strength of the rest of the team pushed the other teams later scorers back in the pack.”

In the nordic competitions, Roberts noted Tate Hearst stole the show, while Oliver Castle and Lily Stowe had personal bests.

The Camden girls alpine team enjoyed another successful day of events Friday, according to Roberts, as did both the boys and girls nordic team.

Both the Camden girls and boys performed well in the skimeister competition and filled much of the podium.

The Skimeister awards are given out to those competitors that ski all four disciplines across both alpine and nordic.

“This year saw one of the best years for participation and the competition was strong, but not only that — these kids need to complete all four runs of alpine to be even considered,” said Roberts.
