CAMDEN - Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day when family and friends gathered to place flowers on the graves of soldiers from the Civil War. It has since turned into a national day to pay tribute and honor those who laid down their lives for their country so that we may have the freedoms we enjoy today.

Camden ceremonies kicked off at the Camden Public Landing and Harbor at 9 a.m. with opening remarks by Jeff Sukeforth, followed by a prayer led by American Post 30 Chaplain Dave Franclemont and the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance.

Steve Beveridge, U.S. Army and Vietnam War veteran was the keynote speaker.  The National Anthem was sung by Robin Tarentino, and a wreath was placed in the water. A rifle volley and TAPS was played.

At 9:30 a.m. the annual Memorial Day Parade stepped off from Union Street with stops at the Conway Boulder, Village Green War Memorial, Civil War and Spanish American War Memorial, ending at Mountain View Cemetery.
