Plan B incorporates virus precautions

Belfast to tackle annual Big Litter Pickup in mid-May

Sat, 04/11/2020 - 10:30am

Keeping Belfast Maine Beautiful has picked up every piece of roadside litter for the last two years. Hundreds of volunteers and teams organized by KBMB have done the needed dirty work of removing tons of litter from Belfast roads.

In 2020 everything is different because of the coronavirus, according to a news release.

“KBMB has come up with Plan B for the third annual 2020 Roadside clean-up event,” said organizer Mike Hurley. “We have expanded the pick-up days to four days total for everyone's convenience-- May 12 to May 16.  We hope all who are interested in making Belfast beautiful will reach out and join us this year and are encouraging families or groups of less than 10 to participate – don’t forget to continue practicing safe distancing, hand washing and use of sanitizers.

“We will have tables set up on those dates from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Chamber of Commerce on Main Street to receive your area assignment, supplies needed, instructions (sharps disposal, etc)  and a new cool and free pink neon shirt.

“A dumpster at Front Street Pub parking lot will be available for the roadside (no tires or furniture or personal household trash, please) trash bags.  Or if your filled trash bag needs to be picked up you can call/email Parks and Rec for bag pick-up at the location. 338-3370 x127 parksandrec@cityofbelfast.org.

“Please let Parks and Recreation know before 2 p.m. that day for trash pick-up.

“Updated information can be found on the Keeping Belfast Maine Beautiful Facebook page.  The big ‘thank you BBQ’ will be held later in the year when it is more comfortable to be in group settings and it will be eventually.

“What better time to get out into the community (social distancing) and do a small civic service? We’ll see you on the side of the road.

Join your neighbors and area businesses in Keeping Belfast Maine Beautiful. Get out in the fresh spring air, stay 6’ away from people, and lend a hand.
