Belfast City Council meets tonight, topics include Veterans Day Parade, removal of airport obstruction poles
BELFAST — The Belfast City Council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting this evening, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. While City Council meetings are typically held the first and third Thursday of each month, this meeting has been moved to Monday due to the Nov. 2 election.
Meetings begin with a roll call of Belfast Mayor Eric Sanders, and City Councilors Mary Mortier, Neal Harkness, Michael Hurley, Brenda Bonneville, Paul Dean, in addition to City Manager Erin Herbig, and Administrative Assistant Manda Cushing.
Items on the meeting’s consent agenda include a request from Moonbat LLC, doing business as Marshall Wharf Brewing, for renewal of the group’s liquor license. Marshall Wharf Brewing is also seeking approval for a Special Amusement Permit for live entertainment, including music, karaoke, a DJ, and dancing for both the business’s interior and exterior. Similarly, Bowen’s Tavern is seeking approval for a Special Amusement Permit for the same items.
A request from VFW Post 3108 will request approval for a parade permit application to conduct the annual Veterans Day Parade and demonstration, which takes place every Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. The event will include a walk from Waldo Avenue to the waterfront.
This year’s Veteran’s Day Parade will feature “new and exciting events,” according to an email from Belfast VFW Operations Manager Jim Roberts.
The parade will depart from Belfast Area High School at 11 a.m. New to the parade this year will be a “rock opera,” featuring acts from the group Focus, which will include live performances of music, skits, and stories of veterans that the performers have encountered during their travels, according to Roberts.
Business items on the agenda include consideration of approval for a three-year Union Contract between the City of Belfast and the Belfast Police Association/Fraternal Order of Police.
A request by the Belfast Airport manager will be heard, asking the City Council to authorize the City Manager to enter into an agreement with Northern Line Construction to remove nine airport obstruction poles.
Belfast City Council meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Meetings are conducted online using Zoom and can be streamed on the City of Belfast website. They also air live on BEL TV and on Belfast Community Radio at WBFY 100.9.
