Barbara Young, obituary
CAMDEN — Barbara Burrage Young, wife of Arden Young and mother of David, Emily and Nancy, died Sept. 18, 2013, in Portland. She was born May 4, 1930, in Camden, and was the daughter of Barbara was the daughter of Mabel Libby Burrage Sallinen and the granddaughter of Anna and Harry (Bill) Libby.
She was raised from the age of 2 by Grammy (Libby) in the state fish hatchery building in Camden until the age of 11, when Bill Libby, the hatchery superintendent, died. Grammy then had a house built just up the street at 133 Molyneaux Road. Grammy continued to be thought of as Barbara's mother, until she died at the age of 93. Grammy had the little store next to the hatchery that sold salty hamburgers, hot dogs and such. It was a nice place for Barbara to bring her kids for summer vacation.
Barbara had a close relationship with the family of her step-father, Bill Sallinen. This relationship helped compensate for the fact that she had no close blood relations. Their relationship continued until she died.
Barbara earned her degree in mathematics at the University of Maine-Orono. She then worked for G.E. in Pittsfield, Mass. In 1956, she quit her job to indulge a longtime dream of going to Egypt. She went, by herself, on a Norwegian freighter, the captain of which, Arne Bull Skadburg, adopted her much as a daughter. She did the tourist tour of the Nile by train, and visited sites that had three other tourists that today would have 12 busloads of tourists. She returned home and got her job back at G.E.
Her life changed when her longtime acquaintance, Arden Young, inquired of Grammy Libby one summer day in 1958, "When might Barbara be coming home?" Grammy answered, reluctantly. Barbara and Arden were married April 26, 1959.
Surviving is her husband of 54 years, Arden Young; her children, David Young and his wife, Heidi Knox Young, Emily Gaudinier and her husband, Carol, and Nancy Young, all of Binghamton, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Melissa and Justin Gaudinier.
Barbara's last days were made easier by the generous attentions of JoEllen Stammen.
