April P. DeVarney, obituary
ROCKLAND — April “Apple” P. DeVarney, 68, passed away peacefully with her family by her side Saturday, December 5, 2020, at her home in Rockland.
Born May 5, 1952, in Rockland, she was one of three daughters born to Bessie (Staples) Collamore, who passed in July of 2012. April spent the early part of her years in Bremen before moving back to Rockland in her late
teens, living the majority of her life here.
She attended Rockland District High School and graduated from the University of Maine at Augusta in 2017 with an Associate’s Degree in Arts & Liberal Sciences. While at UMA, she became student body president, an
accolade that she was very proud of.
April worked as a server in various restaurants during her life. She loved interacting with people, telling them stories, and learning about them. She worked at Peggy’s Kitchen, The Navigator Restaurant, Pine Grove
Restaurant, and Jessie’s Café where she was part owner with her sister Paula McWilliams.
Later in life, after receiving her education she worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the former Shore Village Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, and as a Certified Residential Medical Assistant (CRMA) at Bartlett Woods.
April loved cookouts, going to the casino with her friend Priscilla, taking long scenic rides, playing cards, doing things with her husband and family, and catching up with friends over coffee. But probably her favorite hobby was playing Bingo, which she was very skilled at!
People loved April’s sense of humor. She loved to joke with everyone and could bring a smile to anyone’s face. She loved to pick people up when they were down, and was a very caring, compassionate, and considerate person to all the lives she touched.
April was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She married Bruce DeVarney in 1981, and he remained a loving, devoted husband until the day she passed. Bruce has been an incredible father and step-father to April’s children.
Predeceased by her mother; and her sister Paula, whom she loved with all of her heart; she is survived by her son, Larry Reed Jr of Rockland; daughters, Paula Ryder and her husband Jason, of Shrewsbury Massachusetts, Brooke Simmons and her husband Jason of Friendship, and Laci DeVarney of Rockland; her grandchildren, Kaci, Wyatt, Taylor, Walker, and Mia who were very special to her; as were her nieces BJ, DD, Pauline and Alicia, who she had a special fondness for; her sister Kimberly Stillson; her two sister in-laws, Sandy and Fern of New Hampshure; and her mother in-law, Pauline.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in April’s memory be made to the American Cancer Society, New England Div., 1 Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300 Topsham, ME 04086-1240 or online at www.cancer.org/about-us/local/maine
The family is very grateful to all of those that reached out during this time. We are also grateful to the many doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals that treated her, and for Pastor Thomas Rawley’s spiritual guidance.
Because of the current Covid-19 restrictions, and the winter season, a memorial service will be held for April in early May, when the family will spread her ashes, as she requested. More information will come as the day approaches.
