ROCKLAND — The 12th annual Hippo Cup regatta, hosted by the Mid Coast Laser Association, was held Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Rockland Apprenticeshop.

Competitors were treated to a spectacular day with warm temperatures and winds ranging from two to 12 knots. Eight boats competed for the grand prize — a roaring hippopotamus on a platter.

Shifting winds challenged the sailors and the race committee.

After seven races, Chris Schreiber of Tenants Harbor won with a score of 11 points, followed closely by Tom Jamieson of Belfast in second and Sean Guinness of Blue Hill in third.

Laser sailboat racers have competed for the Hippo Cup for many years, with the regatta originating at Chris Biggert's home on the St. George River in Thomaston.

The event is the second regatta of the Maine fall Laser sailing season, with the first being the Loon Cup in Manchester and ending with the Portland Yacht Club November Laser Frostbite series.
