Sandy road conditions contribute to accident in Lincolnville Wednesday
LINCOLNVILLE — Dirt and gravel on the approach to a stop sign at the intersection of Greenacre Road and Route 52 (Belfast Road) Wednesday afternoon are being blamed for playing a role in an accident that caused one vehicle to slide through the intersection and collide with another.
Waldo County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cody Laite said that 18-year-old Forrest Boucher, of Islesboro, was traveling east on Greenacre Road in a 2012 Hyundai around 3:30 p.m. Dec. 21, when the accident occurred. He said that when Boucher saw the stop sign, he applied the brakes but slid across the dirt and gravel on the road, and could not stop in time.
“There is no way to tell if speed was a factor, but road conditions certainly played a role,” said Laite.
As Boucher’s car kept sliding forward, his Hyundai was hit broadside by a 2015 Chevrolet Cruz, traveling southbound and being driven by 24-year-old Philip Cook of Lincolnville. The impact sent Boucher’s car sliding across the lawn of the adjacent Roberts residence, where the car came to rest just 8 inches from the home’s front porch.
Lincolnville Fire Department responded to the scene, as well as North East Mobile Health Services.
Laite said side and front airbags on both vehicles deployed, both driver were wearing seat belts, and neither driver was injured. Boucher had to climb out of his car through the passenger door, as the driver’s side door was smashed in the impact.
“Both cars were totaled in the accident,” said Laite.
Laite said he did not issue any citations, but said that his report notes that Boucher failed to yield the right of way, with the contributing factor of road conditions.
