Maine Treasury is holding financial assets for thousands of current, former Midcoast residents
AUGUSTA — Midcoast residents should head to the Maine Treasury’s website as soon as possible, because the state’s Unclaimed Property Fund has increased by $13,506,933.25 since last year, and a quick check of the database shows at least 12,090 line entries of property waiting to be claimed by individuals and businesses in Camden, Rockport, Lincolnville, Rockland, Belfast, Searsport, Northport and Hope. We didn’t check all the towns in Knox and Waldo counties, but suffice it to say that number would likely be double if we did.
The property in the state’s database consists of financial assets that have gone unclaimed by their owners, and the last known owner's information is now available on the Treasurer's website.
"Over the last year, the Office of the Treasurer has received over $13 million worth of unclaimed property that rightfully belongs to the people of Maine. This total includes 52,000 individual properties. Over prior years, the State Treasurer has received $191 million that has not yet been claimed," said Maine Treasurer Neria Douglass. "Mainers should check our website to see if we are holding property that belongs to them, or someone they know.”
Unclaimed property consists of cash and other financial assets that are considered lost or abandoned when an owner cannot be located after a specified period of time. It includes, among other items, checking accounts, certificates of deposit, over payments, gift certificates, paid-up life insurance policies, unpaid wages, uncashed checks, death benefits, dividends, insurance payments, refunds, savings accounts, stocks and contents of safe deposit boxes.
According to the Treasurer’s office, unclaimed property does not include real estate, animals or vehicles.
Millions of dollars are turned over annually to the Treasurer of Maine by entities that cannot locate the owners. If your name is on the list, file your claim electronically and government officials will process your claim. There is no fee charged to process an Unclaimed Property Claim, whether on the Maine Treasurer’s official website or by mailing a paper claim form. Also, you do not need to pay anyone to help you make your claim.
