Penobscot Narrows Bridge to close Sunday so ice can melt
PROSPECT — A break in below-freezing temperatures forecast for Sunday is prompting the state Department of Transportation to again close the Penobscot Narrows Bridge, this time to allow ice to melt from the span's cable stays and pylons.
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge will be closed Sunday, Jan. 5, at least between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The bridge was closed a week ago, Dec. 29, after ice falling off the cables began crashing onto passing cars and the bridge surface below. Six cars were damaged, including two that were totaled, according to state officials.
"Last Sunday, the bridge closed due to the unique weather conditions that caused ice to drop from the cable stay bridge onto the road way, damaging traveling vehicles. Due to freezing temperatures, ice has remained on the bridge so the bridge re-opened, and has remained open, since Monday, Dec. 30," said officials in a press release Jan. 3 about the impending closure.
Motorists will need to seek alternate routes and use either Route 15 or Route 1 A to Brewer. DOT personnel will be on site throughout the day Sunday and will re-open the bridge as soon as it is safe for the traveling public, according to the release.
"If enough ice has melted, it is possible the Penobscot Narrows Bridge could open to all traffic by Sunday evening," said the release. "If needed, crews will evaluate the bridge at first light on Monday, Jan. 6."
In this case, commuters who use the bridge before 8 a.m. should seek an alternate route.
"We realize this is inconvenient for motorists, but public safety is our top priority and we need to ensure that this unusual icing condition has been resolved," said Joyce Taylor, the DOT's chief engineer.
