BCOPE students participate in Maine State Science Fair
Three students from the Belfast Community Outreach Program for Education, BCOPE, competed against nearly 300 high schoolers from across the state at the annual Maine State Science Fair, held on Saturday, March 29. These students showcased their research, creativity, and ability to explore real world problems through their science or engineering projects.
October Patterson, Eric Nason and Emma Witham presented their projects at this year's competition. Their research represents several months of hard work, curiosity, and dedication to scientific inquiry, according to a news release.
Additionally, October Patterson was a recipient of the MMSA REACH award for her project, “Which is Better for Home Growing”, which compared hydroponic systems with traditional grow methods for the home gardener.
“We (the entire BCOPE community) are so incredibly proud of these students for their hard work and commitment to these projects.,” said Lindsey Schortz, BCOPE science teacher. “Their participation at the Maine State Science Fair is a testament to their dedication and work ethic and we are excited to see them continue to grow and challenge themselves in the future.”
The Maine State Science Fair, organized by Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance and The Jackson Laboratory, provides students with an opportunity to present their research to a panel of judges, including scientists, educators, and STEM industry professionals. Participants also had the chance to earn academic scholarships and special awards during the fair.
