Author talk with Kay Stephens: "From Lobster Traps to Red Carpets: How a Maine Novel Became an Award-Winning Feature Film"
LINCOLNVILLE — For a backlist book to become a movie shot in Maine is exceedingly rare and Midcoast author Kay “K.” Stephens will tell that story Friday, March 21, at 7 p.m., at the Lincolnville Historical Society, as part of the LHS "Fridays at the Museum" series.
In 2009, her debut novel, The Ghost Trap, was published by Leapfrog Press. The contemporary novel centers around a Midcoast lobsterman struggling with his girlfriend’s traumatic brain injury and a brewing trap war started by his family’s rivals.
In 2018, L.A. producers with ties to Maine optioned the book. It took six years for all of the pieces to come together to shoot the film in Midcoast Maine and on the water. Stephens not only wrote the screenplay, but also served as an executive producer on the film and became the amateur photographer every day on set.
"Her Spruce Head lobstermen friends were pivotal to the film’s success," said a news release.
"Her unique story will interest anyone interested in learning how a relatively small novel caught the attention of Hollywood, the iconic Midcoast locales that are featured both in the book and in the movie, and the challenges of filming in Maine when so many other major productions do not due to low film incentives," said the release.
The doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the event starts at 7 p.m., kicking off with a local musician playing a short set. A brief Q & A will follow. Signed copies of the book will be available for purchase.
