CUSHING — Robert "Bob" Montgomery, 79, passed away peacefully at home Sept. 14, 2013, after a very courageous three-year battle with multiple cancers. He was the husband of Tessie Miller Peters Montgomery.

Born in Rockaway Beach, N.Y., he was the son of George and Dorothy (McDermott ) Montgomery, and moved to Cushing with his family at a very young age. He continued to make his home there and Bob attended the local school and graduated from Thomaston High School's Class of 1952.

In earlier years, he worked as a truck driver at several jobs in the area. For more than 35 years, he drove a pulp truck for Lawrence Brooks Forest Products in Thomaston, retiring in 1996. He truly loved being a truck driver and had delivered to most all of the paper mills throughout the state during over the years.

Bob enjoyed many things throughout his life. For the past 12 years, he made extreme life changes that enabled him to fully appreciate more and experience new things in life, especially with his wife and family. More than anything, he loved to ride and didn't care where he was going, as long as he was in the passenger seat. Many of those rides he enjoyed in the company of his step-daughter, Kelley, and his two dogs, Mitchell and Dusty. He liked to spend time with his grandchildren and took several trips with them when they were younger.

A very proud Mason, Bob had been a member of Orient Masonic Lodge #15 in Thomaston for many years. He was also a member of the Owls Head Transportation Museum and would often take his 1930 Ford Model A, which he restored and took to museum shows and would drive it in the Thomaston Fourth of July parade. For several years, he enjoyed being asked to give children rides in his Ford at the Lura Libby School Fall Carnival. His Model A was his pride and joy.

Robert was predeceased by his parents; half siblings, Roderick Montgomery, George Montgomery and Dot Montgomery Hoatling; and a grandson, Roland Peters Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Tessie Montgomery; his step-children, whom he thought of as his own, Roland Peters of Waterville, Marlene Peters Libby and her husband, Bruce, of Appleton, Kelley Peters of Rockland and Gary Peters of Cushing; his grandchildren, Daniel Libby of Appleton, Meggan and Tyler Peters of Damariscotta, Kelley-Anne Peters Davis of Tenants Harbor and Colleen Peters Fontaine of Waterville; a sister, Rosalie Matson of Cushing; a brother, Maynard Montgomery and his companion, Gerry Hutcheson, of Rockport; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two daughters, Linda Liscombe and her husband, Tim, and Diane Bouchard; and a stepdaughter, Deborah Arni.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Jackie Sanborn of Kno-Wal-In Hospice for her special care, continuous support and help during this difficult time; to Miles of Hope for their service; and to the physicians and caregivers at the Harold Alfond Cancer Center.

Friends and relatives are invited to a remembrance gathering Thursday, Sept. 19, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 201 Main St. in Thomaston, with a service at 7 p.m., and a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. Private interment will be held at the convenience of the family in Pine Grove Cemetery in Appleton.
