ROCKPORT — Everyman Repertory Theatre joins Writers for Democratic Action’s nationwide event in presenting “It Can’t Happen Here – Again" Friday, July 19, at 6 p.m., at The Barn at Barnswallow, 166 Russell Ave. Admission for the reading is free.
In 1936, It Can’t Happen Here, a stage adaptation by Sinclair Lewis of his own bestselling novel, opened simultaneously on 21 stages in 17 states across America on October 27, one week before that year’s presidential election. It served as a warning against the rise of fascism in America. “It Can’t Happen Here – Again,” by Writers for Democratic Action, is both an homage to the 1936 production and a call to action now, in 2024.
The Everyman Rep reading runs about an hour and features local performers Jan Zimmerman, Beverly Scott, James Reitz, Andrea Itkin and Dagney Ernest.
Donations to the Maine League of Women Voters will be accepted.
